So You Wanna Be Famous

During the week I speak with several artist and I ask them what their goals are for their music careers, and they tell me that they hope to be #1 Recording artist someday.

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news but to fill the shoes of a goal so important is you have to do the work. Nothing is overnight and everything that you are blessed with comes with the work of your hands.

Often I work with artist and they think all they have to is a few radio campaigns and they are going to be famous and truthfully it doesn’t work like that and it never has. There is a process to this let’s call it a blueprint and all you have to do is follow the blueprint.

Every now and then we hear of people in the music or another profession and you see people who been success stories from being YouTube or Twitter and discovered by a well known celebrity but that is once is a million.

You must apply yourself to enjoy the fruits out of life and be willing to take the advice at the time it is given.

The sad part about this is some of the women in the industry are willing to not take advice and go their own route without an income as an artist you can best forgot about it because you will need to invest your money regardless either that or find you an investor.

I recall having a conversation with a young lady and she told me hold on because she was putting her make up on. Honestly I thought she was an airhead. You couldn’t wait to put the makeup on?

I was giving the sista some serious advice and she kept on telling me about all the people she knew in the music business yet, apparently they didn’t have her best interest at heart or I wouldn’t be wasting my breath with this conversation.

This goes to show you that everybody is not ready for this business and oh yeah talk is cheap!

Business Before Pleasure

For the past 5 1/2 months have been working for the company 4UEntertainment/Universal I always deal with so many artist trying to hit on me but men sometimes enough is enough. “Everyday is a new day in today’s new music age. Now I know lots of you get at get a little excited, and whether you wanna learn the business side or become a recording artist. Always remember business before pleasure some people don’t know how to separate the two focus on your music career and if someone catches your eye handle the business at hand. He or she maybe so business oriented that this could destroy any business deal so it clearly not worth it so focus on the business.

You are always going to be in the studio making music, and spending the majority of that time recording songs. You may have met someone attractive and articulate who know the business very well. It is possible they may not be entertained with that so do what’s important and stay focused on the business. I can’t stress that enough.

Let’s say you have a meeting with a potential manager or Producer and you have the potential to be a big star if the person that you have met is trying to make it personal if you are not asking for that this may not be a great situation. This is a male dominated industry so ladies or gentleman please come with your A-game every time what you do don’t know makes you the weakest link.

Your a struggling artist trying to make it, get a record deal and your just want the right person to discover your talent. Or your might even be attracted to the business aspect of it. Being personal with someone could arise conflict and mess up a wonderful business relationship. My vocal coach use to say don’t #uck your money. He always kept it real and at the end of the day I couldn’t do nothing but respect it.

Based on my own personal experiences, the best plan of action is learn the music business from both sides. There is empowerment in knowing all the tricks of the trade. You in essence protect yourselves from the evildoers in the music industry that don’t have your best interest at heart. If you have met someone that has your best interest at heart keep it business!!!

Attention Recording Artist there is so much that some of you don’t know, so it is best to learn everything about the music business that you can. You certainly don’t want to become the victim of a bad record deal or worse. Being personal and having a work relationship isn’t advised especially if you are looking to make a lot of money together not everybody is going to be the next Will & Jada or Bea & Jay.

If you have interest in someone it’s not worth to become personal with someone you work with. Women we are emotional and at times our emotions run wild from being intimate with someone that you work with and this could a bad situation and a definite no-no

Learn about the business so someone your working with won’t use this against you trust yourself and do your research and learn as much about the business that you can.

People will take your kindness for weakness and may use it for bad based on their knowledge base. Better yet always study the concepts of contracts, Publishing, Copyrights, Marketing & Promotions & that includes music Promotion.

I thought it might be a great idea to create a blog about the music business and mixing business with pleasure. I’ve realized that I like to empower people. Don’t be so blind-sided for fame and Fortune especially if don’t have an entertainment lawyer to handle this matters for you & don’t mix business with personal if you can help it. You will save yourselves from so many headaches! heartache and drama. I’m sure we all could live without chaos in our lives I know I can.
